MRs. Barney's Choir Class
MRS. BARNEY'S CHOIR CLASS
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year. I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you, as well as learning and gaining new knowledge and experiences. Music and all the fine arts are immensely important to our education system. Not only does music enhance the core academics, it also creates creativity and individual insight on one's self. Choir is an elective class offered here at Hornedo. In choir, students will learn how to sight read music, sing in different languages, sing different genres of music, sing with accurate pitch and posture, and simply learn to make beautiful music. Students will be able to express themselves through music, therefore, I am sure every student will enjoy choir here at Hornedo.

Supplies Needed
Grading Policy
50% Test Grades (this includes CONCERTS and music skill checks-SIGHT-SINGING).
50% Daily and Participation Grades
Eligibility
NO PASS, NO PLAY. A grade of 69 or below in any class will prevent the student from performing with the choir or participating in events OUTSIDE OF HORNEDO. THIS IS TEXAS STATE LAW. This will indirectly affect the choir participation grade. Please make it a priority to keep all grades at a passing level. It is extremely important that students pass every class, every nine weeks. Please refer to the EPISD website for the Eligibility Calendar.
Concerts & Absences
Advanced choir students will have the great opportunity to sing in EPISD and UIL contests. All advanced singers must be present to all mandatory rehearsals and performances. Beginning choir students have the opportunity to participate in these concerts if they wish; however, they must attend all rehearsals for those performances and know all the music being performed. ALL choir students are required to attend the concerts that take place at Hornedo, which include the Winter and End of the Year Concerts.
Students will be introduced to basic music theory, a variety of choral literature, proper vocal technique, and performance opportunities. Concerts are mandatory. Students who have an unexcused absence for a concert will be given a zero. Legitimate, excused absences can be made up on a case by case basis at the director’s discretion
In scheduling Choir events for the year, I attempt to avoid as many conflicts as possible. Some dates are set by the Fine arts office, some by the TMEA region, and a few are set by the school. Dates are given well in advance of the event. Please read the calendar posted on the Choir website. Students are responsible for keeping their families informed of scheduled performances / rehearsals, and informing the teacher of expected absences and conflicts. Attendance is MANDATORY at all performances and all scheduled rehearsals. An excused absence from any Choir function must follow the same format as an excused absence from school – personal illness or a family emergency. Absences from concerts will not be excused after-the-fact except in the case of emergencies. In the case of an excused absence, make-up work will be given.
Concert Attire
Men: All Black- black pants, black button down shirt, and black shoes.
Women: All Black- black dress (if the dress is showing any part of the legs, you must wear black tights or black pantyhose). Black pants and black blouse, black shoes.
Performance Dates and Reahearsals: TBD
*Rehearsals and Concerts will be posted on the Schoology Calendar as well as on the Choir Webpage*
